<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Are you ready to become a pumping pro? Look no further! This complete guide to breast pumping 101 will equip you with all the knowledge you need to succeed in your pumping journey.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">AS a breastfeeding counselor and mom of 2 little ones, I know how tough it is to navigate the new world of pumping. That&#8217;s why I decided to write this guide. From when to start pumping to how many breast pumps, how often to pump breast milk and how much, we’ve got you covered. Discover the different types of breast pumps, tips for effective pumping, and proper storage techniques.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Welcome to &#8216;Pumping 101 For New Moms: Your Complete Guide to Breast Pumping&#8217;.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Key takeaways</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><p><strong>When to start pumping:</strong> Experts recommend waiting 4-8 weeks before you start pumping if breastfeeding is going well. However, there are circumstances where earlier pumping may be necessary, such as if the baby is unable to breastfeed or needs to be separated from the mom when she returns to work (in this case start 3 weeks before work starts).</p></li>

<li><p><strong>How often to pump: </strong>Pump whenever the baby is being <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/best-bottle-for-breastfed-baby-who-refuses-bottle" data-type="post" data-id="2092">fed from a bottle</a> to maintain milk supply. If preparing to return to work, start pumping twice a day shortly after breastfeeding. Once back at work, pump every three hours, matching the <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-many-baby-bottles-do-i-need-if-breastfeeding" data-type="post" data-id="1351">number of bottles</a> the baby takes while the mom is away.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>How much milk to pump:</strong> The amount of <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-much-expressed-milk-to-feed-baby-calculator/">milk to pump depends on milk supply, baby&#8217;s age</a>, and weight. Moms generally <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/is-my-newborn-getting-enough-breast-milk" data-type="post" data-id="1639">make enough milk</a> to meet the baby&#8217;s daily needs. When the pump replaces breastfeeding, aim to pump the same volume as the baby takes from each bottle feeding.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Tips for successful pumping:</strong> Learn how to hand-express milk before using a pump. Consider priorities when buying a breast pump and seek opinions from friends and experts. Ensure pumping is not painful and consult a lactation consultant for assistance with pump setup and fit.</p></li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before we get into the article let’s address a common question:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Can I just give my baby formula instead of exclusively pumping my own milk?</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, of course you can, it’s mom’s choice how she feeds her baby. Before making a decision I would ask that you check out this article first: <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/breastfeeding-vs-formula-studies" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Breastfeeding vs Formula Studies</a>. Breastmilk is undeniably the best nutrition you can give your baby but if you choose to offer formula it’s best to be full<span style="font-size: var(--global-kb-font-size-md, 1.25rem); color: var(--global-palette4); font-family: Raleway, var(--global-fallback-font);">y informed.</span></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The purpose of a breast pumping is to help you maintain your <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-increase-milk-supply-quickly" data-type="post" data-id="1175">milk supply</a>, especially if you plan to return to work or need someone else to feed your baby.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Using a breast pump can also be beneficial for increasing milk supply, donating breast milk, bonding with your baby, and building a stockpile of extra milk for emergencies or times away from your baby.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s important to note, however, that while pumping shares many similarities with breastfeeding, there are a few key differences that we&#8217;ll discuss further.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">What is a breast pump?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>A breast pump is a device that&#8217;s designed to mimic a baby&#8217;s natural nursing rhythm, helping you to extract and store milk when direct breastfeeding isn&#8217;t possible or convenient. It is a convenient way to feed your baby your nutritious breast milk, even when you&#8217;re not physically present.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are various types of breast pumps, including electric, hand (manual pumps), single or double breast, and <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/elvie-vs-willow" data-type="post" data-id="1912">hands-free pumps</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Check out my post: <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/best-wearable-breast-pump" data-type="post" data-id="798">The best wearable breast pumps: Express milk anywhere, anytime</a> and <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/best-smart-breast-pumps" data-type="post" data-id="1187">The 6 Best Smart Breast Pumps for Busy Moms</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Manual breast pumps are hand-operated, requiring effort, but they&#8217;re quiet and portable. On the other hand, electric pumps can pump more milk and are often adjustable. More on this later.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Determining how much milk to pump can vary based on your baby&#8217;s needs and your own comfort. Remember, every drop counts!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To ensure comfort and effectiveness, it’s important to choose a breast pump that fits properly and to follow these breast pumping tips and techniques.</p>
</div></div>
</div></div>

</div></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">Is pumping the same as breastfeeding?</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/smiling-woman-breastfeeding-her-daughter-1024x683.jpeg" alt="Smiling Woman Breastfeeding her Daughter" class="wp-image-2284" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/smiling-woman-breastfeeding-her-daughter-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/smiling-woman-breastfeeding-her-daughter-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/smiling-woman-breastfeeding-her-daughter-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/smiling-woman-breastfeeding-her-daughter-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/smiling-woman-breastfeeding-her-daughter.jpeg 1800w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The answer is yes and no! Pumping is a way to express breast milk and provide it to your baby. So you are still giving your baby all the amazing <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/breastmilk-facts" data-type="post" data-id="1441">benefits of breast milk</a> but via a bottle.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Breast pumping and breastfeeding differ in more than just the mechanics, but both are crucial tools in your journey to nourish your little one.</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><p><strong>Feeling</strong>: Breastfeeding can be a more intimate experience, with skin-to-skin contact. Pumping, while efficient, doesn&#8217;t offer the same bonding experience.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Convenience</strong>: Pumping, especially with electric breast pumps, can allow you to multitask. You also have the ability to store breast milk for later use, offering flexibility.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Others Can Help</strong>: With pumping, others can feed your baby, giving you some much-needed rest.</p></li>
</ol>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why should I pump my breast milk?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are a multitude of reasons moms pump their pump breast milk. Here are a few of the most common:</p>

</ul></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s also worth mentioning that hand expression can be used in conjunction with pumping to further stimulate milk production.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Read my post: <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/pumping-at-work-tips" data-type="post" data-id="1488">9 Pumping at Work Tips You Need to Know: A Quick Guide for Busy Moms</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left" style="text-transform:none">When to start pumping</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="394" height="388" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-165.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1208" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-165.png 394w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-165-300x295.png 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Timing can be centered around your specific needs and circumstances, which could range from <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/5-5-5-rule-postpartum" data-type="post" data-id="2644">pumping right after birth</a> to <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/breastfeeding-vs-exclusive-pumping" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="1258" rel="noreferrer noopener">exclusively pumping</a> from the start.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It may be necessary to start pumping earlier than the <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/breastfeeding/when-to-start-pumping" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.healthline.com/health/breastfeeding/when-to-start-pumping" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>recommended 4-8 weeks post birth</strong> </a>if your baby is unable to breastfeed or if you need more milk to build a stockpile for when you return to work.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other hand, if breastfeeding is going well and there’s no immediate need, experts generally recommend waiting a few weeks to establish a good milk supply before starting to pump.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">Benefits of starting pumping early</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Starting to pump early can bring several benefits, especially in certain situations such as having a premature baby or returning to work shortly after birth. Early pumping helps establish and maintain your milk supply, allowing you to provide a steady source of nutrition for your breastfeeding baby.</strong></p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><p style="text-align: start"><strong>Encourages milk production: </strong>Your body operates on supply and demand. The more you pump, the more milk you&#8217;ll produce.</p></li>

<li><p style="text-align: start"><strong>Creates a milk reserve:</strong> If you&#8217;re returning to work or have to be away from your baby, having a reserve supply can be a lifesaver.</p></li>

<li><p style="text-align: start"><strong>Helps in special circumstances: </strong>For new moms of premature babies or those with latch issues (such as <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/laryngomalacia-and-breastfeeding" data-type="post" data-id="1758">laryngomalacia</a>), early pumping can ensure your little one gets the nutrients they need.</p></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Consult a lactation consultant for personalized breast pumping tips. Remember, every mom&#8217;s journey is unique.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Can you exclusively pump from birth?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Choosing to exclusively pump from the start is a personal decision, and it&#8217;s important to understand the reasons and timing for this approach. You may choose this route due to personal preference, health issues, or a return to work. Here are three key points to guide you:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><p><strong>Start early:</strong> If you&#8217;re exclusively pumping, start as soon after birth as possible to stimulate milk production and breast tissue.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Establish a pumping schedule:</strong> Consistency is crucial. Aim to pump every 2-3 hours, including overnight, to maintain milk supply.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Double pumping:</strong> This breast pumping tip can save time and increase production.</p></li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" style="text-transform:none">Do I need to pump if I’m exclusively breastfeeding?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You may consider pumping even if you’re exclusively breastfeeding for various reasons.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><p>Pumping can help stimulate milk production, especially if you’re experiencing low milk supply.</p></li>

<li><p>If you’re unable to breastfeed due to medical reasons or temporary separation, pumping allows you to provide breast milk for your baby.</p></li>

<li><p>Pumping enables you to build a supply of milk for when you’re away from your baby or when others need to feed them.</p></li>

<li><p>Regular pumping sessions can help maintain your milk supply and prevent a decline in production.</p></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By incorporating double pumping, using a double pump that extracts milk from both breasts simultaneously one breast only, you can save time and increase milk output.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Check out my post:<a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-combine-breastfeeding-and-pumping" data-type="post" data-id="1801"> How to Combine Breastfeeding and Pumping: Essential Tips for Success</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left" style="text-transform:none">Different types of breast pumps</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>There are three main types of breast pumps: electric pumps, manual pumps, and multi-user pumps.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Electric pumps</strong> are powered by electricity and offer convenience and efficiency by extracting milk quickly. Some pump models allow you to pump both breasts at once, saving you time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Manual pumps</strong> are operated by hand and are compact and portable. They are great for occasional use or when you are on the go.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Multi-user pumps</strong>, like their name suggests, are designed for multiple users and are often found in workplaces or hospitals. These hospital-grade pumps are high-performance models that ensure maximum milk expression.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left" style="text-transform:none">Understanding the pumping experience</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As you embark on your pumping journey, it&#8217;s crucial to understand what to expect.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You may have concerns about whether pumping hurts and what your nipples might look like after pumping.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let&#8217;s address these points to ease your worries and ensure you&#8217;re fully prepared for this new experience.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" style="text-transform:none">What does pumping feel like?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Every woman’s experience is different, but most describe pumping as a sensation of gentle tugging or pulling.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You&#8217;ll likely experience a variety of sensations the first few times you use a breast pump, as it&#8217;s quite different from nursing your baby directly. It&#8217;s important to remember that just like nursing, it takes time and practice to learn and get comfortable with.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Does breast pumping hurt?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Breast pumping shouldn’t hurt. While it might feel unusual at first, it shouldn&#8217;t cause pain.</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re pumping exclusively and experiencing sore nipples, it may be due to over-pumping or improper flange size. Soreness often results from the flange being too small, causing friction against your nipples. It’s important to ensure that the flanges fit properly and aren’t too small or too large.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other hand, pain may also result from high suction levels. Adjusting to a low suction level to mimic your baby’s sucking frequency can also help alleviate any discomfort. Additionally, lubricating the flanges with a small amount of breast milk or lanolin/<a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/best-nipple-cream-for-breastfeeding" data-type="post" data-id="760">nipple cream</a> can provide some relief. Remember, more suction doesn&#8217;t mean more milk.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="709" height="629" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-179.png" alt="Flange size" class="wp-image-1324" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-179.png 709w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-179-300x266.png 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Healthline.com</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Try these tips:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><p><strong>Hand expression</strong>: To alleviate any discomfort, you can use hand expression techniques to gently massage and stimulate the nipples post-pumping. This can also help encourage more milk flow.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Air dry</strong>: After pumping and hand expression, let your nipples air dry. This can help maintain nipple health and prevent any potential irritation.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Pump regularly</strong>: Pumping approximately every 2-3 hours can help maintain a consistent milk flow and help your nipples adjust to the pumping routine.</p></li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How should nipples look after pumping?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>After pumping, your nipples may appear elongated, reddened, firmer to the touch or slightly swollen due to the milk flow and suction during pumping &#8211; don&#8217;t fret &#8211; this is completely normal and expected. This is more likely if you have <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/what-is-elastic-nipples-breastfeeding" data-type="post" data-id="1319">elastic</a> nipples.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are a few things to keep in mind about how your nipples should look after pumping:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><p>Your nipples may appear slightly elongated or drawn out after a pumping session. This is because the suction from the breast pump mimics the natural sucking action of a baby, causing the nipple to stretch and lengthen.</p></li>

<li><p>Your nipples may also feel firmer to the touch after pumping. This is due to increased blood flow and stimulation during the pumping process.</p></li>

<li><p>It’s important to note that the size and shape of your nipples may vary from person to person. Breast pumps often come with different-sized flanges to accommodate different nipple sizes and ensure a proper fit.</p></li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left" style="text-transform:none">Pumping schedules and routines</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Getting the hang of breast pumping involves determining how often and how long you should pump. Your pumping schedule may take some tweaking in the beginning, especially with a newborn.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let&#8217;s explore guidelines for finding your frequency, understanding the ideal duration of each pumping session, and special considerations when pumping for newborns.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left" style="text-transform:none">Finding your frequency: How often to pump</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The frequency of pumping will depend on your baby&#8217;s age and feeding habits.</strong> Establishing a consistent pumping schedule that suits your lifestyle and meets your baby&#8217;s needs is a crucial aspect of successful breastfeeding. Here are some basic guidelines:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><p>Newborn moms pump<a href="https://www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/health-information/expressing-your-breast-milk#:~:text=Babies%20feed%20often%2C%20so%20you,set%20fixed%20times%20to%20express." data-type="link" data-id="https://www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/health-information/expressing-your-breast-milk#:~:text=Babies%20feed%20often%2C%20so%20you,set%20fixed%20times%20to%20express." target="_blank" rel="noopener"> 8-10 times a day</a> to establish milk supply.</p></li>

<li><p>After a few months, you may be able to reduce the frequency to 4-7 times a day.</p></li>

<li><p>If you&#8217;re going back to work, you&#8217;ll need to pump every 3 hours during your working hours.</p></li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How many times a day should I pump while breastfeeding?</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/10-1-1024x512.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1365" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/10-1-1024x512.png 1024w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/10-1-300x150.png 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/10-1-768x384.png 768w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/10-1.png 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pump at least eight to ten times a day while breastfeeding to maintain a healthy milk supply.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s important to consider pumping after every feeding, as it helps stimulate your breasts and signal your body to produce more milk.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Breast pumping after each feeding can be beneficial because:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><p style="text-align: start">It helps ensure that your breasts are emptied completely (which can help prevent issues like <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/engorgement-vs-mastitis" data-type="post" data-id="851">engorgement, mastitis</a> and plugged ducts).</p></li>

<li><p style="text-align: start">It can help increase your milk supply by providing additional stimulation to your breasts.</p></li>

<li><p style="text-align: start">It allows you to build up a stash of breast milk, which can be helpful for times when you’re unable to feed your baby directly.</p></li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">How long should you be spending on each pumping session?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This is a common question for many moms and the answer can vary as it depends on several factors. Most mothers find pumping for <a href="https://www.laleche.org.uk/exclusively-expressing-breastmilk-for-your-baby/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">15-20 minutes</a> is sufficient to express milk. However, the duration of each pumping session could be influenced by the type of breast pump you&#8217;re using as many breast pumps have different settings.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s important to balance supply and demand, so adjusting your routine may be necessary. Monitor how your body responds and adjust accordingly. Below is a table to guide you:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table is-style-stripes"><table><tbody><tr><td>Morning</td><td>15-20 minutes</td></tr><tr><td>Mid-day</td><td>10-15 minutes</td></tr><tr><td>Evening</td><td>15-20 minutes</td></tr><tr><td>Night</td><td>10-15 minutes</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are some key points to consider when determining how long to pump per session:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><p>Begin each pumping session with a minimum of 15 minutes of pumping to ensure proper milk extraction.</p></li>

<li><p>If your breasts still feel full or if you continue to see milk flow after 15 minutes, you can extend the pumping session to 20 minutes to fully empty the breasts.</p></li>

<li><p>It’s important to take short breaks during the pumping session to rest and relax. This can help improve milk flow and overall comfort during pumping.</p></li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">Special considerations for newborns</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>During the early stages of breastfeeding, it is important to establish a pumping schedule that aligns with your baby’s feeding needs and allows for consistent milk production.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Particularly in the early weeks, you&#8217;ll need to be flexible and patient as both you and your newborn learn the ropes of baby nursing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are three important things to remember:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><p>Your breast pumping schedule should ideally mimic your baby&#8217;s nursing patterns. <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nutrition/infantandtoddlernutrition/breastfeeding/how-much-and-how-often.html" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.cdc.gov/nutrition/infantandtoddlernutrition/breastfeeding/how-much-and-how-often.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Newborns typically feed every 2-3 hours</a>, so plan to pump accordingly.</p></li>

<li><p>Night time pumping is crucial during the early weeks as it aids in establishing your milk supply.</p></li>

<li><p>Always remember, the goal isn&#8217;t to measure success by the ounces you pump but by your baby&#8217;s growth and satisfaction.</p></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Starting to pump while breastfeeding your newborn can be beneficial for several reasons, such as increasing milk supply, creating a stockpile of milk for emergencies or times away from your baby, and getting your baby comfortable with taking a bottle (if you anticipate needing to bottle feed soon).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table aligncenter"><table><tbody><tr><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" "><strong>Situation</strong></p></td><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" "><strong>When to Start Pumping</strong></p></td><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" "><strong>How Often to Pump</strong></p></td></tr><tr><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" ">Baby breastfeeding well and no immediate return to work</p></td><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" ">Wait 4-8 weeks before pumping</p></td><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" ">Pump whenever baby is being fed from a bottle to maintain milk supply</p></td></tr><tr><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" ">Baby unable to breastfeed, born prematurely, has health issues, or needs to be separated from mom</p></td><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" ">Start pumping as soon as possible</p></td><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" ">Pump every three hours to protect milk supply</p></td></tr><tr><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" ">Need to pump for work</p></td><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" ">Begin pumping and storing breast milk about three weeks before returning to work</p></td><td><p style="text-align: start" class=" ">Pump every three hours, matching the number of bottles baby takes while mom is away</p></td></tr></tbody></table><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><p style="text-align: start" class=" ">When and how often to start pumping during the early weeks of breastfeeding baby</p></figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left" style="text-transform:none">Managing milk production and storage</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Managing your milk production and knowing how to properly store your milk are crucial skills in your pumping journey. Whether you&#8217;re trying to boost your supply or figuring out how many ounces you should aim for each day, understanding your body&#8217;s unique rhythm and capabilities is key.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We&#8217;ll also walk you through the best practices for safe and efficient milk storage, ensuring your precious supply is always ready when your baby needs it.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How to reach and maintain full milk production</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="538" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Woman-drinking-water-and-eating-a-balanced-meal--1024x538.png" alt="Woman drinking water and eating a balanced meal " class="wp-image-2434" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Woman-drinking-water-and-eating-a-balanced-meal--1024x538.png 1024w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Woman-drinking-water-and-eating-a-balanced-meal--300x158.png 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Woman-drinking-water-and-eating-a-balanced-meal--768x403.png 768w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Woman-drinking-water-and-eating-a-balanced-meal-.png 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>To reach and maintain full milk production, you need to consistently pump at regular intervals throughout the day.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Keeping track of your breast milk output, both in ounces per session and total ounces per day, is vital for ensuring your baby&#8217;s nutritional needs are met.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here&#8217;s how to establish how much milk you are pumping:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><p><strong>One breast at a time:</strong> Pump each breast separately to measure how much milk each is producing. This is especially helpful if milk flowing seems uneven.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Daily totals:</strong> At the end of the day, add up the ounces you&#8217;ve pumped from each session. This will give you a better understanding of your daily output.<span style="color: var(--global-palette4);"> <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/pitcher-method-breast-milk" data-type="post" data-id="2577">Consider the Pitcher Method</a> if you plan to pump a lot.</span></p></li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You&#8217;ll find that with the right techniques and a bit of patience, you can maximize the benefits of pumping.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">Maximizing the benefits of pumping</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pumping not only provides nourishment for your baby, but it also helps maintain your milk supply, and can even alleviate discomfort from engorged breasts or clogged ducts.</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><p><strong>Consistency is key</strong>: Establish a regular pumping schedule to stimulate milk production.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Use the right technique</strong>: Ensure a proper latch to the pump for efficient milk extraction.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Stay hydrated and <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/breastfeeding-calorie-calculator" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nourished</a></strong>: Your body needs fuel to produce milk.</p></li>
</ol>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">Essential tips for a smooth pumping experience</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>When choosing a breast pump, consider your budget, portability, and your baby’s needs.</strong> Seek opinions from friends and experts before purchasing, and remember that hospitals and WIC offices may offer rental or loaner pumps.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>It’s important to ensure that pumping isn’t painful</strong>; adjust the flange size and suction if necessary. Consulting a lactation consultant can provide valuable assistance with pump setup and fit. Creating a comfortable environment can be hugely beneficial such as a <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/best-breastfeeding-chair" data-type="post" data-id="867">pumping or breastfeeding chair</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When starting pumping, <strong>determine if you’re eligible for a free breast pump through your insurance</strong>. Avoid buying or borrowing a used pump due to hygiene concerns.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Always use breast pump flanges that fit properly</strong> to ensure comfort and effectiveness. Consider getting a hands-free pumping bra, to hold up the flanges, freeing up your hands.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And, however tempting, <strong>don’t skip nightly</strong> pumping sessions, as it can impact your milk supply.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left" style="text-transform:none">Preparing for the pumping journey</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/5-1024x512.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1874" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/5-1024x512.png 1024w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/5-300x150.png 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/5-768x384.png 768w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/5.png 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hello nursing moms! As a fellow mom and paramedic with two children whom I breastfed for over a year each, I know that the breastfeeding journey is not always smooth. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, I want to address a topic that may not be widely discussed but can affect many of us: <strong>elastic nipples</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You may have asked yourself &#8216;What is elastic nipples breastfeeding?&#8217; and struggled to find answers!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Elastic nipples are exactly what they sound like &#8211; they&#8217;re nipples that stretch more than usual when your baby latches on or when you&#8217;re pumping. Having elastic nipples is not a problem in and of itself, but it can cause some <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/breastfeeding-problems" data-type="post" data-id="520" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">challenges when breastfeeding </a>or <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/pumping-101-for-new-moms" data-type="post" data-id="2350">pumping</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While breastfeeding, nipples usually stretch to accommodate the baby&#8217;s mouth and produce the proper latch for drawing out milk. However, some women may also experience pain from elastic nipples when pumping breast milk. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Elastic nipple tissue may make it difficult for the breast pump to create a proper seal, leading to decreased milk flow and discomfort.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" style="text-transform:none">What are elastic nipples breastfeeding?</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/5-10-1024x512.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1161" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/5-10-1024x512.png 1024w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/5-10-300x150.png 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/5-10-768x384.png 768w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/5-10.png 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Elastic nipples definition</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Elastic nipples are nipples that stretch more than the expected amount when breastfeeding or pumping. This can cause the nipple to become elongated making it difficult for the baby to latch on properly. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When pumping elastic nipples can mean that too much areola is pulled into the flange tunnel. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>It is important to note that some stretch in the nipple is normal, but excessive stretching</strong> <strong>of elastic nipple tissue is not.</strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Causes of elastic nipples</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are several causes of elastic nipples, including:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><p>Using the wrong size breast pump flange &#8211; If the flange is too small, it can cause the nipple to stretch excessively. On the other hand, if the flange is too large, it can cause the nipple to rub against the end of the flange or sides, leading to pain and discomfort.</p></li>

<li><p>Overusing a breast pump</p></li>

<li><p><a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/engorgement-vs-mastitis" data-type="post" data-id="851">Engorgement</a></p></li>

<li><p>Poor latch</p></li>

<li><p><a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-heal-nipple-fissure-while-breastfeeding" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="898" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nipple trauma</a></p></li>

<li><p>Genetics &#8211; some women are predisposed to having more elastic nipples than others.</p></li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Breastfeeding and pumping with elastic nipples</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/11-4-1024x512.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1167" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/11-4-1024x512.png 1024w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/11-4-300x150.png 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/11-4-768x384.png 768w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/11-4.png 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How elastic nipples affect breastfeeding and pumping</h3>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><p><strong>Excessive stretching of</strong> the nipple can lead to <strong>painful swelling, bruising, and even nipple trauma. </strong></p></li>

<li><p>Elastic nipples can <strong>impact milk supply</strong> by compressing milk ducts and suppressing oxytocin production, resulting in a slow or inefficient <a href="https://www.pregnancybirthbaby.org.au/let-down-reflex#:~:text=The%20let%2Ddown%20reflex%20is%20what%20makes%20breastmilk%20flow.,to%20push%20out%20the%20milk." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">milk ejection response</a>. This problem can lead to a <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/is-my-newborn-getting-enough-breast-milk" data-type="post" data-id="1639">decreased milk output</a>, making it harder for babies to get the nutrition they need.</p></li>

<li><p>Elastic nipples can make it <strong>difficult to achieve a proper latch</strong>. The nipple may flatten or invert, making it harder for the baby to grasp and causing frustration for both <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/definition-of-a-stay-at-home-mom" data-type="post" data-id="796">mom</a> and baby. </p></li>

<li><p>The vacuum strength of the <strong>pump can cause the nipples to stretch too much</strong>. This stretching can be uncomfortable, and in some cases, it can even cause the nipples to swell inside the baby&#8217;s mouth or at the end of the flange (the flange is the part of the breast pump that fits over your breast). If you&#8217;re not using the correct flange size, the problem can be exacerbated.</p></li>
</ol>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tips for breastfeeding and pumping with elastic nipples</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But what can you do if you have elastic nipples? Don&#8217;t worry, there are plenty of solutions out there!</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Choose the correct flange size</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="709" height="629" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-179.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1324" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-179.png 709w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-179-300x266.png 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Healthline.com</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, it&#8217;s crucial to ensure you&#8217;re using the correct flange size. Check out healthline.com&#8217;s flange sizing guide <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.healthline.com/health/breastfeeding/breast-pump-flange#sizing">here</a> to help you find the correct size and right fit. The manufacturer of your pump should also provide a guide for ensuring you choose the right size for you. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Using the wrong flange size can cause too much areola to be pulled into the flange tunnel, leading to painful swelling and potentially causing more <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-heal-nipple-fissure-while-breastfeeding" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="898" rel="noreferrer noopener">nipple damage</a>. A flange that is too small could also compress milk ducts leading to <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-increase-milk-supply-quickly" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="1175" rel="noreferrer noopener">decreased milk supply</a>. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Adjust pump settings</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Experiment with different vacuum strengths and cycle speeds to find the settings that work best for your nipples to avoid pain and nipple damage.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Use lubrication</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Coconut oil is another great tool to have in your breastfeeding arsenal. Applying a bit of coconut oil to your nipples before pumping can help reduce friction and make the pumping session more comfortable.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Use breast pump cushions</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pump cushions like Beaugen breast pump cushions can help improve comfort and fit, especially for moms with flat or inverted nipples. These silicone inserts fit inside your flange and provide a softer surface for your breast tissue. They attach directly to the skin, creating a barrier between your nipples and the plastic flange of your pump. They can help reduce the stretch and discomfort that comes with having very elastic nipples. Find a link <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.beaugen.com/blogs/news/how-to-tell-if-you-have-elastic-nipples-and-what-you-can-do-about-them">here</a>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="518" height="512" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-180.png" alt="BeauGen Cushion" class="wp-image-1325" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-180.png 518w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-180-300x297.png 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">BeauGen Cushion</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You might also consider trying silicone flanges. The silicone material is softer and more forgiving than standard flanges. Pumpin Pal is one brand that offers <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pumpinpal.com/shop-2/">these</a>.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Check the backflow protector</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A crucial component of your breast pump is the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.naturalresources-sf.com/products/spectra-backflow-protector">backflow protector</a>. This part prevents breast milk from flowing back into the pump motor, which is particularly important when you have elastic nipples.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The stretching and pulling can sometimes cause milk to flow in the wrong direction. Regularly check and replace your backflow protector as part of your pump maintenance to ensure its effectiveness.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Hand express</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/3-2-1024x512.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1300" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/3-2-1024x512.png 1024w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/3-2-300x150.png 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/3-2-768x384.png 768w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/3-2.png 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hand expressing is another technique that can be helpful, especially if you&#8217;re dealing with low milk supply. By applying gentle pressure to the breast tissue, you can help stimulate more milk production and make your pumping sessions more effective.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Skin care</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s essential to care for your skin and areola. The stretching and suction can be tough on your skin so in terms of pain management, consider applying a cool compress post-feeding or pumping session. The coolness can help alleviate pain and reduce swelling.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s also a good idea to keep your skin hydrated and supple. Regular application of good <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/best-nipple-cream-for-breastfeeding" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="760" rel="noreferrer noopener">nipple cream</a> can help soothe the skin and alleviate discomfort from nipple stretching too.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Seek consultation</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the best ways to get help with elastic nipples is to consult with a lactation consultant. These professionals can help you identify the root cause of your condition and provide you with personalized advice on how to manage it. They can also help you find the right flange tunnel size for your pump, which can make a big difference in your comfort level while pumping.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Wean gradually</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gradually reducing breastfeeding or pumping sessions can help prevent<a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/engorgement-vs-mastitis" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="851" rel="noreferrer noopener"> clogged milk ducts</a> and other problems associated with sudden weaning.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/2-11-1024x512.png" alt="what is elastic nipples breastfeeding" class="wp-image-1141" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/2-11-1024x512.png 1024w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/2-11-300x150.png 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/2-11-768x384.png 768w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/2-11.png 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To all the mothers reading this, I understand that each one of you is unique in your own way. As a mom of 2 and breastfeeding counselor, I know that your body, your baby, and your breastfeeding journey are all distinctively yours. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a part of this journey, you might encounter the phenomenon of elastic nipples, which stretch significantly during breastfeeding or pumping. This stretching can be due to the elasticity of your nipple tissue, a natural and normal part of your body&#8217;s makeup.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph">Experiencing discomfort due to elastic nipples causing pain during pumping is a shared concern among many mothers. It&#8217;s a common issue, and you&#8217;re not alone in this. But, please remember, this doesn&#8217;t spell the <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/giving-up-breastfeeding-guilt" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="1137" rel="noreferrer noopener">end of your breastfeeding or pumping journey</a>!</p>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph">Breastfeeding and pumping can be a rollercoaster ride, filled with its own set of unique challenges. However, these obstacles don&#8217;t diminish the immense worth of the journey. The pain is temporary, but <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/5-5-5-rule-postpartum" data-type="post" data-id="2644">the bond you&#8217;re fostering with your baby</a> is everlasting.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph">There are strategies to manage the discomfort caused by elastic nipples while pumping. You can try using a breast pump with softer silicone flanges, adjusting the suction strength, and ensuring your pump flanges are of the right size.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph">In case you need help or guidance, don&#8217;t hesitate to reach out. It could be to a lactation consultant, a fellow mom, or even through this blog. After all, we are all in this together, navigating the wonderful yet sometimes challenging path of motherhood. Stay strong, dear moms. You&#8217;re doing a remarkable job!</p>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph">Remember, you&#8217;re not just providing nourishment to your baby; you&#8217;re also creating a<a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/are-breastfed-babies-more-attached-to-their-mothers" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="1098" rel="noreferrer noopener"> bond filled with love and care</a>. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Are you a new or expectant parent, weighing the <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/pumping-101-for-new-moms">options of breastfeeding, exclusive pumping</a>, or perhaps a combination of both? <p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this blog post, we&#8217;ll dive into the pros and cons of breastfeeding vs exclusive pumping, explore combination feeding, discuss planning for breastfeeding or exclusive pumping, and share tips for returning to work.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Breastfeeding and exclusive pumping are two distinct ways to nourish your little one with the invaluable benefits of breast milk.</strong> </p>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph">While breastfeeding means nursing your baby directly from the breast, exclusive pumping involves expressing milk with a breast pump and offering it to your baby via a bottle. Each method comes with its unique advantages and challenges, and the ideal choice will ultimately depend on your personal circumstances.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph"><strong>When it comes to breastfeeding, it&#8217;s hard to overstate the benefits for both baby and mother.</strong> </p>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph">Breast milk is nature&#8217;s perfect recipe, delivering the essential nutrients and immune-boosting antibodies your baby needs to thrive. Plus, it&#8217;s easier on their delicate digestive system than formula. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/5-10-1024x512.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1161" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/5-10-1024x512.png 1024w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/5-10-300x150.png 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/5-10-768x384.png 768w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/5-10.png 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph">For moms, <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/are-breastfed-babies-more-attached-to-their-mothers" data-type="post" data-id="1098" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">breastfeeding can strengthen the emotional bond</a> with her baby and may even <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/breastfeeding-after-12-months" data-type="post" data-id="1103" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lower the risk of certain health issues</a> like breast and ovarian cancer, and osteoporosis. However, breastfeeding can present its own set of challenges, such as <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/breastfeeding-problems" data-type="post" data-id="520" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">latching difficulties</a> or <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-increase-milk-supply-quickly" data-type="post" data-id="1175" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">not being able to produce milk</a>, which may make it a daunting experience for some mothers. In fact, some moms decide to <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/giving-up-breastfeeding-guilt" data-type="post" data-id="1137" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">end their breastfeeding journey</a> earlier than they would like.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph">On the flip side, exclusive pumping offers mothers the opportunity to provide their babies with nourishing breast milk while gaining more flexibility and control over their schedules. This method can be a lifesaver for working moms or those who need to be away from their little ones for extended periods. Exclusive pumping also enables other family members to bond with the baby through feeding. </p>

<p class="has-text-align-start wp-block-paragraph">Stay tuned as we delve deeper into the world of breastfeeding and exclusive pumping, providing you with the knowledge and insights needed to make the best decision for you and your baby.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Breastfeeding vs exclusive pumping: Pros and Cons</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When it comes to feeding your baby, there are two main options: exclusive breastfeeding and exclusive pumping. Both methods have their pros and cons, and it&#8217;s important to understand them before making a decision.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table><tbody><tr><td></td><td><strong>Benefits</strong></td><td><strong>Challenges</strong></td></tr><tr><td><strong>Breastfeeding</strong></td><td><em>For the baby</em>: breast milk provides all the necessary nutrients and antibodies to fight off infections and diseases. It also promotes cognitive development and helps soothe babies.<br><em>For the mother</em>, breastfeeding helps with bonding time and can reduce stress. It also releases hormones like prolactin that help with milk production and can aid in postpartum weight loss.</td><td>It can be <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/breastfeeding-problems" data-type="post" data-id="520" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">difficult to establish a good latch</a> in early infancy, which can result in discomfort and pain for the mom. Mothers can also find it challenging to nurse in public or when separated from their baby.<br>Breastfeeding requires a commitment to the baby&#8217;s feeding schedule and can be stressful if the mother is experiencing <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-increase-milk-supply-quickly" data-type="post" data-id="1175" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">supply issues</a>. </td></tr><tr><td><strong>Exclusive Pumping</strong></td><td>Exclusive pumping (EPing) can offer flexibility and convenience for moms who may not be able to directly breastfeed. It allows for the baby to still receive breast milk while the mother is away at work or school. It also allows for the partner or caregiver to have extra milk to help to feed the baby.<br>Exclusively pumping milk can also help with increasing milk production, It can also be helpful for mothers who have <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-heal-nipple-fissure-while-breastfeeding" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="898" rel="noreferrer noopener">sore nipples</a> or difficulty with latching.</td><td>Pumping can be uncomfortable and painful if not done correctly. It can also be time-consuming and expensive, as a good quality breast pump can be costly.<br>EPing also requires planning and scheduling, as pumped breast milk needs to be safely stored and transported. It can also be stressful if the mother is experiencing supply issues or if the baby is not taking well to the pumped or expressed milk.</td></tr></tbody></table><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The benefits and challenges of breastfeeding vs exclusive pumping</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">S0, both breastfeeding and exclusive pumping have their own pros and cons. It&#8217;s important to weigh these factors and choose what works best for you and your baby. Consult with a pediatrician and consider factors such as cost, convenience, and health benefits before making a decision.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Combination feeding</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/13-3-1024x512.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1169" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/13-3-1024x512.png 1024w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/13-3-300x150.png 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/13-3-768x384.png 768w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/13-3.png 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also known as mixed feeding, this is the practice of combining breastfeeding and formula feeding or breast milk pumping. Formula has fewer immune system benefits than breast milk, so this practice allows moms to provide their babies with the benefits of breast milk while also supplementing with a formula feed or pumped milk when necessary. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Reasons for combination feeding</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><p><strong>Low milk supply:</strong> Some moms may not be able to <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-increase-milk-supply-quickly" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="1175" rel="noreferrer noopener">produce enough milk</a> to meet their baby&#8217;s needs, and supplementing with formula can help ensure their baby is getting enough nutrition.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Returning to work:</strong> Moms who return to work may find it challenging to continue breastfeeding exclusively. Pumping and storing breast milk can be time-consuming, and some moms may not be able to pump enough to keep up with their baby&#8217;s needs.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Medical issues:</strong> Some babies may have medical issues that require them to be supplemented with formula or pumped milk.</p></li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tips for combination feeding</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><p><strong>Establish breastfeeding first:</strong> It&#8217;s important to establish a good breastfeeding routine before introducing formula or pumped milk. This will help ensure that your supply of milk is well-established and that your baby is getting enough milk.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Use the right equipment:</strong> If you&#8217;re pumping, make sure you&#8217;re using a <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/medela-freestyle-hands-free-breast-pump-review" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="2103" rel="noreferrer noopener">high-quality breast pump</a> that&#8217;s comfortable and efficient. If you&#8217;re formula feeding, make sure you have the right bottles and nipples for your baby&#8217;s age and needs.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Keep track of feedings:</strong> It can be helpful to keep a log of when your baby is breastfeeding, receiving formula, or being fed pumped milk. This can help you keep track of how much your baby is eating and make adjustments as needed.</p></li>

<li><p><strong>Talk to your healthcare provider:</strong> If you have any concerns about combination feeding or your baby&#8217;s nutrition, talk to your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance and support to help you make the best decisions for you and your baby.</p></li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Schedule</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Breastfeeding and exclusive pumping require a significant amount of time and dedication. It&#8217;s important to create a schedule that works for you and your baby. Consider factors such as your work schedule, your baby&#8217;s feeding habits, and your own personal preferences.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Partner</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having a supportive partner can make all the difference when it comes to<a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/successful-breastfeeding" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="503" rel="noreferrer noopener"> successful breastfeeding</a> or exclusive pumping. Make sure your partner is informed about the benefits of breast milk and is willing to help with feedings and other tasks.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Lactation consultant</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A lactation consultant can provide guidance and support as you feed your baby and navigate breastfeeding or exclusive pumping. Consider meeting with a lactation consultant before your baby is born to discuss any concerns or questions you may have.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Flanges and suction</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Choosing the right flanges and suction settings for your breast pump can make a big difference in your pumping experience. Experiment with different sizes and suction settings to find what works best for you.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Electric Pump and Hospital-Grade Pump</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An electric breast pump can save time and make pumping more efficient. Consider investing in a hospital-grade pump if you plan to exclusively pump or have difficulty with milk supply.</p>

Make sure to research <a href="https://wicbreastfeeding.fns.usda.gov/your-breastfeeding-rights#:~:text=There%20is%20no%20national%20law,any%20public%20or%20private%20place." target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">local laws and </a>regulations regarding breastfeeding and pumping in public.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Freezing and storage containers</h3>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Breastfeeding and exclusive pumping</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether you choose to breastfeed or exclusively pump, it&#8217;s important to prioritize your own comfort and well-being. Make sure to take breaks and rest when needed, and don&#8217;t hesitate to ask for help if you need it.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Returning to work</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/9-1024x512.png" alt="" class="wp-image-558" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/9-1024x512.png 1024w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/9-300x150.png 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/9-768x384.png 768w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/9.png 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Returning to work after maternity leave can be a challenging time for new mothers who are breastfeeding or exclusively pumping breast milk. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>However, with proper planning and preparation, it is possible to pump exclusively and continue providing breast milk for your baby even when you are away from them.</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><p>One important step is to communicate with your employer about your breastfeeding or pumping needs. Many companies have <a href="https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/pump-at-work#:~:text=The%20Fair%20Labor%20Standards%20Act,need%20to%20express%20the%20milk." target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">policies in place to support new mothers</a>, such as providing a private room for pumping or allowing flexible work schedules. It is also helpful to discuss your work schedule with your pediatrician to determine how much milk and often you should pump or breastfeed during the day.</p></li>

<li><p>If you are exclusively pumping, it is important to establish a pumping schedule that works for you. This may involve pumping every 2-3 hours during the workday to maintain your milk production. You may also want to consider using a breast pump app to help track your pumping sessions and milk output.</p></li>

<li><p>It is also a good idea to build up a supply of pumped milk before returning to work. This can be done by either pumping milk after breastfeeding or during times when your baby is napping. Having a <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-organize-frozen-breast-milk" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="1114" rel="noreferrer noopener">freezer stash of milk</a> can give you peace of mind and ensure that your baby has enough milk while you are away.</p></li>

<li><p>If you do need to supplement with formula while at work, it is important to talk to your pediatrician about the best options for your own baby&#8217;s nutritional. They can recommend a formula that is appropriate for your baby&#8217;s age and needs.</p></li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="782" height="391" src="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-173.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1212" srcset="https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-173.png 782w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-173-300x150.png 300w, https://frombumptobubble.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Screenshot-173-768x384.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 782px) 100vw, 782px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Exclusive breastfeeding and exclusive pumping are both valid options for feeding your baby. Each feeding method also has its own benefits and drawbacks, and ultimately the decision should be based on what works best for you and your baby.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Exclusively breastfeeding provides numerous health benefits for both mom and baby.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/are-breastfed-babies-more-attached-to-their-mothers" data-type="post" data-id="1098" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">promotes bonding</a>, provides essential nutrients, and has been shown to have cognitive benefits for infants. Additionally, the act of breastfeeding can be soothing for both mom and baby and provides important skin-to-skin contact. However, breastfeeding can be challenging for some moms, particularly if they experience <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/breastfeeding-problems" data-type="post" data-id="520" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">issues with latching</a> or <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-increase-milk-supply-quickly" data-type="post" data-id="1175" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">milk supply</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Exclusive pumping can be a convenient alternative to breastfeeding for many moms who are unable to breastfeed or prefer not to. </strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It allows for flexibility in timing and can be done by a caregiver, allowing for more freedom for the mom. Pumped breast milk can be stored in breast milk storage bags and <a href="https://frombumptobubble.com/how-to-organize-frozen-breast-milk" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="1114" rel="noreferrer noopener">frozen</a> for later use, making it a great option for moms who need to plan ahead or have supply issues. However, exclusive pumping can be expensive, time-consuming, and can cause stress and discomfort for some moms.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>When deciding between exclusively breastfeeding, exclusively pumping, or using a combination of both, it&#8217;s important to consult with a pediatrician or lactation specialist to determine what is best for you and your baby. </strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ultimately, the decision to exclusively breastfeed, exclusively pump, or use formula should be made based on what works best for you and your baby. With proper planning and support, any method can be successful.</p>
